Summary of Child’s Diabetes Diet

December 26th, 2006

It is heart breaking for parents to find out that their tiny toddler suffers from diabetes. In the past three decades there has been a very significant increase in the number of child diabetes cases. Many doctors are of the opinions that this is a direct result of the growing trend of the younger generation for consuming junk food as well as fast food.

Bad eating habits and sedentary life styles where children choose to watch TV or play video games on the computer rather than play outdoors has resulted in a lot of children becoming obese. The child diabetes (type 1 diabetes) can be attributed to a large extent to this development.

What Are The Main Symptoms Of Diabetes In A Child?

Diabetes manifests itself in a similar manner for both in children as in adults. The most visible symptoms are thirst, weight loss, tiredness, and/or frequent urination. In children, sometimes one will also find frequent stomach aches, irritable behavior, and headaches. When parents observe such symptoms, they should take the child for a thorough check up. If the child is found to have diabetes, adequate measures should be taken to ensure to keep the disease under control.

What Is A Child Diabetes Diet?

Besides insulin injections the best way to control the diabetes in a child is with the help of the correct child diabetes diet. Diet is the greatest tool you have to fight this disease. If the diet is correct, then the diabetic child can act and behave just as any other normal child would. In order to work out the correct child diabetes diet you will need to initially take the help of a trained dietician.

The first and foremost thing when working out the diet is that it should include all the nutrients required for the child’s growth while at the same maintaining a close check on the sugar levels in the blood of the child. As you can see this is not an easy task.  The child diabetes diet is for an initial 3-4 months time on trial and error basis where both the parent and the dietician work out the right combination and quantity of food which will keep the child active and healthy while at the same time keeping the blood sugar levels as low as possible.

The child diabetes diet is a challenge which will take great effort and coordination till the right combination of foods is worked out.
